As a residential liberal arts institution, Colgate takes seriously all of the ways in which students develop during their time on campus.

  • Civic and ethical leadership programs, increasing opportunities for students to engage in civic work and to develop as ethical leaders while benefiting the upstate region and beyond. The Center for Outreach, Volunteerism, and Education (COVE) advocates a model of team-based community work, acting as a center for citizenship and community building, challenging students to become engaged citizens.
  • Debate program, using debate to improve communication skills, enhance intellectual diversity, and engage students and faculty in discussion of ideas, with a focus on Colgate’s parliamentary debate team. Programs will range from competition in the top intercollegiate tournaments, to engaging 400 to 600 students each year in debate-oriented programming, to adding a parliamentary debate exercise to several academic courses.
  • Wellness Initiative, helping students establish healthy behavior patterns that extend beyond their time at college through programs, studies, and services that foster not just the physical and psychological components of wellness, but also the intellectual, social, spiritual, and vocational.
  • Leadership Institute, bringing together student leaders from across campus for training opportunities at the beginning of each academic year, challenging them to focus on leadership development as an ongoing process of self-reflection and experience.
  • Outdoor education, expanding the scope of our model program for teaching students the responsibilities of leadership and community involvement by introducing them to the unique and outstanding recreational and educational opportunities available in upstate New York.
  • Athletic field, upgrading the turf at Tyler’s Field, which serves as a multifunction practice and game facility for many of Colgate’s Division I athletic teams, from football and field hockey to lacrosse and soccer.
  • Information technology innovation, driving initiatives aimed at elevating the presence of new technologies on campus, from a dynamic website to a seamless mesh of wireless access to the university’s network.
