Colgate will create new institutes of advanced study that will support faculty scholarship, enhance the university's global reputation in key areas of expertise, and empower students to explore the frontiers of knowledge. As with institutes in the nation's leading research universities, they will concentrate research and discovery on opportunities and problems that require focused scholarly expertise. The new institutes are as follows:

The Upstate Institute (launched in 2003), establishing meaningful links between the university and the upstate New York region by bringing together Colgate students and faculty with area residents and nonprofit leaders to collaborate on community-based projects year-round. Early efforts have enhanced the economic, social, and cultural capacity of the region, notably Madison, Chenango, and Oneida counties. Download more information.
