Debating natural gas and the environment
Bruce Selleck ’71, Colgate’s Harold Orville Whitnall Professor of geology, traveled to Rochester, N.Y., in January for an engaging discussion with Seamus McGraw, author of Drilling Marcellus Shale and its Impact on the Geology and the People. Sing a new song
This past winter, the Colgate Thirteen, Swinging ’Gates, and Resolutions toured the United States and Canada to perform for alumni and parents. The three student a cappella groups drove thousands of miles and connected with more than 700 alumni, parents, and friends in 19 cities.
The Thirteen set out on a two-week tour to the West Coast and Canada. They stopped to perform for the Club of the Twin Cities, drawing more than 150 alumni and friends — the largest audience at a club event in recent history. Held at the Minikahda Club, the event was generously hosted by Colgate parents. Other alumni clubs enjoyed the sounds of the Thirteen in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and Toronto.
The Resolutions co-ed a cappella group hit the East Coast for their first ‘Jan Tour’ as they celebrate their 20th anniversary as a group. Their trek started in Boston and continued with stops in Westchester, N.Y., New York City, Washington, D.C., and Harrisburg, Pa. Their performance in the great room of Thomas Jefferson’s boyhood home, the Tuckahoe Plantation (c. 1733), was the first official Colgate alumni event in the Richmond, Va., area, and attracted 50 alumni and guests.
The Swinging ’Gates also traveled the East Coast, complementing the Resolutions’ tour with a joint concert celebrating Colgate Day on January 13 in Washington, D.C. Their appearance in Charlottesville, Va., was the first official alumni gathering there.

New Year’s Eve at the Colgate Inn
Who needs Times Square on New Year’s Eve? Laura Westerhold ’10 and Adam Dudek ’09 organized a celebration at the Colgate Inn, bringing back 63 alumni, friends, and guests. The recently renovated inn offered special packages for alumni, which included gift baskets, discounted room rates, and food and drink specials. Colgate’s alumni affairs office helped coordinate the event, giving revelers a gift bag that included a souvenir pint glass and a free slice from New York Pizzeria.
