Commencement 2012 on tour
Not once in its 193-year existence had Colgate conducted a graduation ceremony outside of Hamilton, N.Y. But, history changed in May when Trustee Gus Coldebella ’91 traveled to Philadelphia, diplomas and commencement speech in hand, to celebrate with nine senior members of the Colgate Men’s Lacrosse team, competing in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament.

All year, alumni from the classes of 1992 through 2011 have had a chance to vote their passion and select one of three projects to receive extra funding from President Jeffrey Herbst. The annual fund is pleased to announce that those same alumni can work with their friends to receive class recognition through the Campaign Countdown. Class of 2012 sets class gift record
Determined to honor classmate Vic Krivitski and give back to the university at the same time, Colgate’s Class of 2012 has set a new record for Senior Class Gift participation. Ninety-five percent of this year’s graduating class invested in the Victor Krivitski ’12 Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial support to a student in need next year.

Congratulations, Class of 2012!
Colgate held its 191st commencement ceremony on May 20. Graduating seniors from the Class of 2012 heard comments from President Jeffrey Herbst and from commencement speaker Mark Murphy ’77, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers. Friends and family packed Sanford Field House while others gathered in front of the university’s Livestream channel to watch the proceedings at home. John Knecht retirement
Last month, John Knecht, legendary professor of art & art history and film & media studies, officially retired. He began the year with a special Clifford Gallery exhibition, featuring a series of animations that will set the tone for new works he plans to create in the months ahead. His work was also featured at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. This spring, the university honored Knecht and his three decades work on behalf of Colgate's creative undergraduates, and a fund has been established in his name to support innovation in the art department.
Student triples support for nonprofit with CEO help
Maggie Dunne ’13 earned $20,000 from Glamour when she was named one of the magazine’s top 10 college women for 2012. Before investing the funds in her Lakota Pine Ridge Children’s Enrichment Project, she challenged Global Leaders speaker Sir Richard Branson to write his own check for the same amount — an opportunity he was willing to seize, but only if Dunne found a third sponsor.
Colgate community looks back at World War II
A pair of new books on World War II history has focused attention on the Colgate community. Professor Ray Douglas has just published Orderly and Humane: The Expulsion of the Germans After the Second World War, which chronicles his research into the forced migration of German-speaking civilians between 1945 and 1950. Meanwhile, Colgate alumnus Andy Rooney ’42 shares the spotlight with A.J. Liebling, Walter Cronkite, and other legendary WWII reporters in Assignment to Hell by Tim Gay.
Standard & Poor’s raises Colgate University’s bond rating
Colgate improved on greatness last month when Standard and Poor’s Ratings Services raised the university from a AA- to a AA ranking on its long-term and underlying ratings. The upgrade came in response to our solid fiscal health, aided by expert management and the generous support of alumni, parents, and friends.

Peter Baum ’13 named top player in college lacrosse
Congratulations to Peter Baum ’13, winner of the 2012 Tewaaraton Award. Baum is the first Patriot League player ever to win the honor, given each year to the best men’s and women's lacrosse players in the nation. The Tewaaraton is a crowing achievement for Baum, a first-team All-American 2012 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year.
Raiders field hockey team blogging about Europe trip
Colgate Field Hockey stretched its muscles while traveling the international circuit last month, taking on teams in Ireland and Holland while soaking up the history and culture of Great Britain and northern Europe. As they traveled, they blogged about their experiences. The trip may be over, but the entries live on — read them today.
