Rallying the Raiders

Much has been written in recent years concerning the role of athletics at the collegiate level. And no institutions face greater scrutiny than do most IA and many IAA programs throughout the country. John Lombardi, chancellor and professor of history at UMASS in Amherst, considered this problem in an article for Inside Higher Ed. He stated, "We love sports because they teach teamwork and the value of struggle against adversity. We hate sports because they corrupt the pure ideals of academic life. We love sports because they bring glory and visibility to our college's name. We hate sports because their visibility celebrates the false value of winning at any cost."
