Alumni discuss presidential search during Reunion College

Chris Clifford ’67, Board of Trustees Chair and presidential search committee member, brainstorms with alumni.

Reunion is a time for reconnecting and relaxing — it’s also the perfect time to stretch the mental muscles by attending Reunion College events. Dozens of alumni seized the opportunity and joined our Alumni Forum on the Presidential Search, one of several offerings on Friday, May 29.

Board of Trustees Chair Chris Clifford ’67 and Associate Professor Padma Kaimal, who serve on the search committee, led the discussion. They encouraged the audience to ask questions, provide feedback, and help the committee lay out a list of traits that would describe Colgate’s next president.

The group used Rebecca Chopp as a point of departure, noting her ability to find a common vision among contrasting viewpoints while thoroughly enjoying her role as an educator. The audience stressed the need for someone who could further the current strategic plan while demonstrating the creativity and tenacity that will move Colgate ahead in the liberal arts marketplace.

Should the university refine the list of presidential responsibilities? Should our new executive look inward, outward, or in both directions at once? Amid questions and comments from the floor came the realization that, “We’re not just talking about the president; we’re talking about where we want Colgate to be.”

Clifford wrapped up the conversation with a reminder about the rules of a presidential search process: there comes a time when confidentiality takes precedence. “When you don’t hear any news, it’s the nature of the beast. We’re not ignoring you!”

Far from it. You can keep tabs on the committee and submit your own feedback at www.colgate.edu/pressearch.
